Being able to instantly connect with loved ones – especially those far way is an amazing advantage of our digital technology. The problem can occur when we take this great long distance communication and apply it to the detriment of our relationships with the people who are actually close to us now, maybe even in the same room.
And we can’t afford to lose the feeling of excitement that comes from meeting new people and building new relationships. We need a balance in our lives. As Marche says: “We are doing it to ourselves. Casting technology as some vague, impersonal spirit of history forcing our actions is a weak excuse. We make decisions about how we use our machines, not the other way around.” (Marche, 2012)
